The pre-historic rock shelter at Edakal cave, near Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad is a center of great attraction for scholars interested in Neolithic culture in South India. Its rock-cut engravings and inscriptions reflect the earliest civilization and human activities in this region. This center of human legacy was brought into limelight by Fred Fawcett through his study appeared in 1901. This first publication is a reprint of Fawcett’s article with an introduction note by Dr. K.K. N. Kurup, Historian and Former Vice Chancellor, University of Calicut.
