New Director for Shreyas

Rev. Fr. George Vettikattil is appointed as the new Executive Director of Shreyas. Former Executive Director Fr. Dr. Varghese Thannickakuzhy took charge as the Vicar General of the diocese of Bathery. Fr. George Vettikattil was the Asst. Executive Director of Shreyas during 1997-2001. After that he became the procurator of the diocese, Administrator of Pushpagiri Medical College, Thiruvalla and the corporate manager of the diocese. Fr. Sebastian Edayath will continue as the Asst. Executive Director of Shreyas.

Shreyas Day Celebration- 2010

The 32nd annual day of Shreyas was celebrated on 3rd May 2010. Reception to Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thomas the bishop of Bathery Diocese was also organized on the same occasion. The programmes started after the flag hosting by Fr. Dr. Varghese Thannickakuzhy, Executive of Director. Fr. Prasanth, Rajagiri College, Kalamassery led the seminar on ‘challenges and opportunities in the present development scenario’. He described about the millennium development goals and the role of social development workers in fulfilling the same.
The public meeting was inaugurated by Mrs. Valsa Chacko, District Panchayath President, Wayanad. Most. Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thomas, Bishop presided over the function. In the presidential address he shared his vision about Shreyas. Social workers should not allow the violation of human rights. Religions play a vital role in the well being of the human beings. We have to give more focus for the economic development of the people- Bishop told.
The book published by Shreyas on ‘Entrepreneurship Development’ was released on the occasion by Mr. O.M. George, President, Bathery Grama Panchayath. New ventures of Shreyas for the coming phase were also launched. ‘Shreyas food security programme’ second phase and Herbal Village was launched by the Bishop. ‘Sthree Tharang”- women empowerment programme through AHVY project was inaugurated by the district Panchayath President. The Health insurance programme in collaboration with National Insurance Company and Thudithalam – Shreyas Kalasangham were also launched during the function.
Prizes were distributed in the function to the Best Regions, Units, Tribal Mahila samajams and COSMOS quiz winners. Then there was cultural feast performed by ‘Thudithalom’ team. 410 representatives from different regions participated in the function. Fr. Sebastian Edayath Assistant Executive Director and Mr. Z. Francis, Programme Officer led the programmes.

Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture practices through Organic Farming

Shreyas has completed successfully the project on promotion of sustainable agriculture practices through organic farming with the support of IGSSS at Mangode (ward XVIII) in Poothady Grama Panchayath. Model organic village creation, promotion of Vermi composting, integrated training on sustainable agriculture practices and advocacy and lobbying are the major components of the project. Several activities were implemented successfully in the village. 48 families in the village are adopted organic farming practices. The activities were implemented in convergence with the internal programmes and external development institutions. Even though the project period is over the programmes are going well. The paddy cultivation implemented as part of ensuring food security with the Revolving Fund mobilized from Sulthan Bathery Block Panchayath through Wayanad Organic Consortium and the Goat exchange programme are the best examples for that. All families in the village has started growing nutrition gardens. Shreyas is planning to lead the farmers to organic certification programme.

Organizational Development Process

Shreyas conducted its OD Process from 21st to 23rd October 2009 with aim of revisiting the vision, mission and objectives of the Organization. The process was facilitated by Rev. Fr. Varghese Kattuparambil, Director, Renewal Centre, Kochi. The participants were 8 Regional Directors, Central Directors, Central and Regional staff who shared their concerns and experience. Shreyas Executive Director Fr. Dr. Varghese Thannickakuzhy and Asst. Exe. Director Fr. Sebastian Edayath lead the group discussions. The aim of the OD process was to identify and plan the thrust areas to be addressed for the coming 5 years. During the process the organization analyzed its strength and weakness. Through the exercise all the activities are revisited including the present strategies, area of linkage and collaboration according to the need of the time and present perspectives.
