Natural Resource Management

Land, water and biomass are the resource trinity, which is the corner stone of our nature and also the receptacle of all the living things. Eco systems and species provide an enormous range of goods and services, vital to mankind’s well being.

There is a vast amount of information available on indigenous species to be utilized and harnessed for the welfare of the living organisms. The unendurable and un exasperated human interventions are adversely affecting our environment. In this context Shreyas engages in the restoration of natural resources along with the government and other developmental agencies.

Objectives

  1. Formation and strengthening of viable peoples structures to develop innovations, experimentation and people’s movements.
  2. Ensure people’s participation in developing new strategies for systematic and scientific conservation and effective utilization of natural resources.
  3. Establish linkages and collaborations with other development agencies
  4. Conduct research, documentation and extension programmes
  5. Adopt appropriate technology for sustainable development

Intervention Strategies

  • Conduct extensive training programmes.
  • Promotion of non conventional energy
  • Initiate watershed management programmes
  • Promotion of ferrocement technology
  • Promotion of solar energy systems
  • Publish literature on NRM activities
  • Conduct action research
  • Linkage and collaboration with Government and Non Government agencies.

Micro Vermi Composting An initiative for effective waste management & Organic manure production

Now Shreyas is  in the process of promoting organic manure production among our farmers. Vermi composting is one of the best alternative inputs in promoting organic farming. Apart from constructing big tanks using bricks and cement concrete we have introduced small, cost effective and portable tanks in the cylindrical shape made up of ferro-cement technology. The cost of the tank is Rs 500. The height and diameter of the tank is only 70 and 50 cms respectively and the weight is 60 Kg. It consists of water holding channel for preventing ants and system for collecting the vermi wash. This is a simple structure and easy to use even to the women. The cylindrical tank can be filled with the kitchen waste. In addition to this other degradable wastes can also fill.

This will be distributed to the partner families with worms after giving proper orientation. Through this we are aiming at the effective management and recycling of wastes.  The wastes filled will be fully converted to fertile compost with in a short period of 15 to 20 days. These nutrients are in a form that plants can easily absorb.
